The Department of Economics at the Bannerghatta Road campus is functioning under the School of Social Sciences in CHRIST (Deemed to be University). Established in the year 2016 with the commencement of the new Campus at Bannerghatta Road, the Department has representation of faculty from all cultures and regions in India and with qualifications from the top institutions in the country and abroad. Established in 1969, the Department of Economics is one of the strongest and vibrant departments in the institution. The Department of Economics has distinguished itself to be one of the leading centers of learning Economics in the country. The Department has the distinction of having developed a unique and challenging curriculum and syllabi at the Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral Research levels. Students and scholars are trained to analyze concrete problems with the help of conceptual frames, theoretical insights and mathematical, statistical, and econometric tools along with computer applications. Various academic programmes offer a comprehensive package with a thrust on both theoretical and practical applications. Along with core courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Developmental Economics, International Economics, Behavioural Economics, Financial Economics, Environmental Economics, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, a wide range of specialized courses including Labour Economics, Public Economics, Health Economics, and Operations Research are well integrated into the curriculum.

The Department of Physics and Electronics, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), established in the year 1969 has set a benchmark in quality higher education with well-equipped classrooms and experimental laboratories. Well qualified and highly experienced faculty members research in frontier areas of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Material Science, Astrophysics and Nuclear Physics. Materials and Energy research gives thrust in developing nanomaterials, thin films, polymer, and single crystals materials with applications in the field of solar cell, hydrogen energy, batteries, radiation shielding, biomedical, displays, optoelectronics, water purification, and photodetectors. High quality Research in Astrophysics ranges from stellar astrophysics to cosmology. Focused research includes work on X-ray astronomy, galactic astrophysics, studies on the dark universe etc.
Faculty members of the department also have obtained various external research grants from national funding organizations (viz. DST, SERB, UGC, ISRO) for setting up high-quality research infrastructures in cutting edge areas of research. .A state-of-art analytical and characterization Central Instrumentation Facility for energy and environmental research, crystal and thin film growth and Nanomaterial synthesis are available in the Department. Facilities such as X-ray diffractometers, Electron Microscopy, UV- Visible spectrometer, Fluorometer, Microwave Synthesizer Solar Simulator, and computational facilities play a major role in the exceptional research culture.
Department interacts closely with other Institutes/Universities/Organizations within India and abroad via established collaborations, associateship and MOUs. Department has high quality and high impact research papers and patents published in Scopus/ Sci Index and other prestigious journals. Activities organised like expert talks, guest lectures, international/national/regional conferences, quality improvement programs on various research and teaching themes, workshops, refresher courses, seminars, exhibitions, quiz programs, industry visits provide exposure to the frontier developments in higher education and research. The department also emphasizes skill development and value addition through certificate programmes, interdisciplinary courses and holistic education. Post graduate and under graduate students are also actively involved in the various research projects (both internal and external with national fellowship) as a part of their curriculum, ensuring a vibrant research culture.

When I was working as a Trade Advisor at Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Cooperation (MPIDC) in the Export Cell, my multidisciplinary background due to Liberal Arts played a pivotal role in securing the position. My expertise in international relations, economics, and business set me apart. The numerous activities, internships, and capstone projects I engaged in during my time in college also showcased practical exposure even as a fresher. I was able to leverage these experiences to land my job. I also have started my own company which is completely different from my 9-5 and I was only able to do that because I was not limited to just one discipline. It’s helped me actively manage multiple things at once even when they aren’t interrelated but also allowed myself to find connections in the two areas of my career paths and find dynamic solutions that work for both!

Doing a Liberal Arts degree has been one of the best decisions I have ever made because not only did it give me the opportunity to explore and understand what I am inclined towards and what I would like to pursue in the future, it has also helped me focus on the bigger picture and the issues that we are facing in today’s world and how we can try to solve the same. I am currently in Social Beat, a digital marketing company, and the surprising fact is that I never knew I had an inclination towards digital marketing before I took this degree. Overall, I would say that the degree has not only helped me improve and advance academically but also holistically.
