The Department of Sociology and Social Work at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) was founded in the year 2017 through a merger of the two separate Departments of Sociology and Social Work. Sociology Department was started in the year 1971 and Social Work Department in the year 2004. The department offers Undergraduate programmes under the triple major system with the departments of Psychology, Economics, International Studies and History, and English Studies.

It offers three Postgraduate programmes, namely Master of Arts in Applied Sociology, Master of Social Work (with two distinct streams - Clinical and Community Practice, and Human Resource Development and Management) and a Master of Science in Sustainable Development. The Department also offers two Postgraduate Diplomas in Life Skills for Leadership and Community Development, and Disaster Management. The Department has research programmes including PhD and Post-doctoral fellowships.

The Department offers multidisciplinary undergraduate programmes and postgraduate programmes in Applied Sociology and Social Work with specialisations in Clinical and Community Practice or Human Resource Development and Management. We also offer an interdisciplinary postgraduate programme in Sustainable Development and Doctoral programmes in Sociology and Social Work.
We focus on holistic learning, and the teaching and learning strategies used reflect this focus. When I was working as a Trade Advisor at Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Cooperation (MPIDC) in the Export Cell, my multidisciplinary background due to Liberal Arts played a pivotal role in securing the position. My expertise in international relations, economics, and business set me apart. The numerous activities, internships, and capstone projects I engaged in during my time in college also showcased practical exposure even as a fresher. I was able to leverage these experiences to land my job. I’m grateful to CHRIST (Deemed to be University) and the Department of Liberal Arts for providing me with the exposure needed to stand out in such a fast paced world.

Personally, liberal arts has helped me acquire dynamic positions where I’m a growth lead at a pharmaceutical based company and only my multidisciplinary education has helped me think in ways that integrate various different approaches to my daily problem solving. I also have started my own company which is completely different from my 9-5 and I was only able to do that because I was not limited to just one discipline. It’s helped me actively manage multiple things at once even when they aren’t interrelated but also allowed myself to find connections in the two areas of my career paths and find dynamic solutions that work for both!

Doing a Liberal Arts degree has been one of the best decisions I have ever made because not only did it give me the opportunity to explore and understand what I am inclined towards and what I would like to pursue in the future, it has also helped me focus on the bigger picture and the issues that we are facing in today’s world and how we can try to solve the same. I am currently in Social Beat, a digital marketing company, and the surprising fact is that I never knew I had an inclination towards digital marketing before I took this degree. Overall, I would say that the degree has not only helped me improve and advance academically but also holistically.
