Liberal Arts, at CHRIST (Deemed to be) University, Bannerghatta Road Campus is dedicated to offering courses and programs that focus on a broad, interdisciplinary approach to education. Liberal Arts encompasses a range of subjects focussed around the themes of environment, social justice, peace-building, gender and intersectionality, history and material culture, psychology, media studies, communication, industry and innovation - all of which is aligned with the idea of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Liberal Arts Program also refers to the concept of globalization in all its forms – including political, biological, digital, cultural, economic, and most importantly – historical. With courses designed to equip its undergraduate students with a plethora of skills like critical thinking, research writing, analysis, performing and visual arts and culture, language, communication, creativity, as well as the know-hows of being industry-ready, the Liberal Arts undergraduate program is - one of its kind - in striving to enable its students to be competent and knowledgeable problem-solvers who will be ready to address contemporary issues in today’s world. The aim of the Liberal Arts is to nurture well-rounded individuals who are socially responsible, intellectually enriched, effective communicators and above all, are compassionate thinkers with a penchant to build a better world.
We at Liberal Arts, firmly believe that new ideas come from ‘thinking outside the box’ and developing new perspectives that combine diverse ways of knowing the world. With our enabling environment, empowered leadership and governance structure, we are breaking away from the pattern of conventional educational structures and creating a space for student-centric flexible learning systems which allows students to explore and curate their own visions and aspirations – incorporating creative expressions like music, theater, art and sports into the curriculum as well. Our majors’ program has been designed to offer a selection of stimulating coursework that prioritizes class discussion, featuring dedicated and experienced faculty, and prepares students for an inspiring career.
Within this approach, the Liberal Arts degree allows the students to tailor their own specialisation according to their own unique interests by choosing from amongst seven ‘Interdisciplinary Thematic Tracks’ as listed below:
Environment and Sustainability
Gender and Minority Studies
Urban Studies
Healthcare and Wellness
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
Peace and Conflict Studies
Communication Studies
The seven thematic tracks allow seven possible trajectories for a student’s career growth after completing the degree including employment opportunities in the fields of research, teaching and learning, policy and practice, development and advocacy, industry and consultancy, arts and creativity. The foundational knowledge acquired in these seven thematic areas forms the basis of a knowledge pool that will enable deeper understanding and engagement without necessarily being bound or limited by one particular discipline in their formative years in the university.
The program is interdisciplinary at its core entailing a wide range of faculty expertise in various disciplines. It encompasses a robust pool of invited industry experts, academic scholars and professors contributing to its teaching and learning atmosphere. A diverse student population, successful alumni, good infrastructural facilities, and a range of meaningful campus events further support the Liberal Arts in its growth trajectory throughout the academic year. Both national and international collaborations contribute towards enriching learning outcomes for liberal arts students preparing them for global outreach and interactions.
